Naturally Thriving Pets: The Power of Food and Holistic Healing with Angela Ardolino
Welcome back to Light Body Radio!
Exploring Natural Pet Wellness, Nutrition, Functional Mushrooms, Hemp, and the Endocannabinoid System
Our pets are more than companions—they are part of our families. And as more pet parents become interested in holistic and natural approaches to animal wellness, questions about nutrition, supplements, functional mushrooms, hemp, and the quality of wellness products are becoming increasingly important.
But with so many products and claims available, how do you know what is actually worth giving your pet?
In this episode of Light Body Radio, Dr. Lara May welcomes Angela Ardolino, a clinician and researcher specializing in hemp and functional mushroom wellness solutions for animals, for an engaging conversation about natural pet wellness and becoming a more informed advocate for the animals we love.
From the endocannabinoid system to supplement sourcing and nutrition, this conversation encourages pet parents to look more closely at what goes into the products they give their animals—and to think critically about their approach to pet health.
A Personal Journey Into Natural Health
Angela's interest in natural wellness began with her own health journey.
After being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, she began exploring alternatives and complementary approaches to conventional pharmaceutical treatment. Her experience with full-spectrum cannabis oil ultimately became part of her path toward learning more about plant-based wellness and the endocannabinoid system.
That personal experience eventually expanded into a passion for animal wellness.
Her work focuses on the idea that supporting an animal's health involves looking at the whole picture—including nutrition, lifestyle, environmental factors, and the quality of wellness products being used.
Understanding the Endocannabinoid System
One of the fascinating topics discussed in this episode is the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
The ECS is a biological signaling system found throughout the bodies of mammals, including dogs and humans. It is involved in regulating a variety of physiological processes and is associated with maintaining homeostasis, or balance within the body.
Because the endocannabinoid system interacts with numerous biological pathways, it has become an area of growing interest in both human and veterinary wellness research.
Angela discusses why understanding this system can provide useful context for pet parents interested in hemp and cannabinoid-based wellness products.
As with any supplement or therapeutic product, however, individual animals can respond differently, and pet owners should consult an appropriately qualified veterinarian before introducing new products.
Why Supplement Quality Matters
The supplement market can be confusing.
Walk into a pet store or browse online and you'll find countless products promising everything from improved mobility to better digestion and cognitive support.
But not every supplement is created equally.
Angela emphasizes the importance of looking beyond the front of the package and learning how a product was sourced, processed, tested, and formulated.
This is particularly relevant when it comes to functional mushroom supplements.
Fruiting Body vs. Mycelium
One topic discussed in the episode is the distinction between mushroom products made primarily from the mushroom's fruiting body and products containing mycelium grown on grain or other substrates.
Angela recommends looking for products that clearly disclose their ingredients and sourcing rather than assuming that every mushroom supplement is equivalent.
She also discusses the use of dual-extraction methods, which are commonly used in mushroom products to extract different classes of compounds.
For pet parents exploring functional mushrooms, the broader lesson is simple: understand exactly what you're purchasing.
Read the label. Research the manufacturer. Ask questions about sourcing and extraction. And don't assume that two products with the same mushroom name are necessarily comparable.
The Importance of a Certificate of Analysis
Another important topic is the Certificate of Analysis (COA).
A COA is a laboratory document that can provide information about the composition and testing of a product. Depending on the product and laboratory, testing may include cannabinoids, contaminants, heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, microbial contamination, or other quality parameters.
For natural supplements intended for animals, transparency matters.
Pet parents can look for manufacturers that make relevant laboratory testing available and clearly identify what their products contain.
This can be especially useful when considering hemp or botanical products, where product quality and composition can vary.
Looking Beyond the Ingredient List
Angela also encourages pet parents to look closely at the ingredients used in supplements.
Some products contain additional ingredients that may serve as binders, bulking agents, or other formulation aids.
The conversation raises questions about unnecessary fillers and emphasizes the importance of understanding why each ingredient is included.
Rather than choosing a product based solely on marketing language, consumers can become more informed by examining:
The complete ingredient list
Where the ingredients are sourced
How the product is processed
Whether independent laboratory testing is available
Whether a current COA can be provided
The manufacturer's quality-control practices
Whether the product is appropriate for the animal's species, size, age, and health status
Being an informed consumer is one of the most practical forms of advocacy we can provide for our pets.
Functional Mushrooms and Canine Cognitive Health
The conversation also explores functional mushrooms and their potential applications in animal wellness.
Angela discusses her work with formulas containing ingredients such as lion's mane mushroom and Bacopa monnieri, particularly in relation to canine cognitive health.
She references research involving dogs with signs of canine cognitive dysfunction and discusses reported outcomes from a formula she developed.
Canine cognitive dysfunction is a condition associated with age-related changes in brain function and may involve symptoms such as disorientation, changes in sleep patterns, altered interactions, or changes in house-training behavior.
Research into nutritional and botanical interventions for cognitive health in aging dogs is continuing. While individual ingredients may show promise, pet owners should discuss cognitive or behavioral changes with a veterinarian rather than assuming that a supplement is an adequate treatment.
The larger takeaway from this conversation is the importance of supporting healthy aging through comprehensive care.
Nutrition as a Foundation for Pet Wellness
One of the strongest themes throughout the episode is nutrition.
What animals eat can influence their overall health, and diet is an important part of responsible pet care.
Angela advocates for species-appropriate nutrition and encourages pet parents to think critically about highly processed diets and the long-term nutritional needs of their animals.
The appropriate diet for a pet depends on many factors, including species, age, activity level, health conditions, and individual nutritional requirements.
For that reason, major dietary changes should be discussed with a veterinarian or qualified veterinary nutrition professional.
Rather than viewing food as simply something that fills a bowl, this conversation encourages us to recognize nutrition as one component of a much larger approach to animal wellness.
What About Lumps and Bumps?
The episode also touches on a common concern among dog owners: lumps and bumps.
Angela offers her perspective on the relationship between nutrition, toxins, fatty tissue, and these common findings in dogs.
This is an area where it is particularly important to distinguish personal or holistic perspectives from established veterinary diagnosis.
A new lump, bump, growth, or change in an animal's body should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Some masses are benign, while others can require prompt diagnosis and treatment. Veterinary examination and appropriate diagnostic testing are the safest ways to determine what a particular mass represents.
The broader message is not to ignore physical changes, but rather to become more observant and proactive about our pets' health.
Becoming an Informed Pet Health Advocate
Perhaps the most important message from this episode is the idea of informed advocacy.
Being an advocate for your pet does not mean rejecting conventional veterinary medicine.
It means asking questions.
It means understanding the ingredients in the products you purchase.
It means researching manufacturers and looking for transparent testing.
It means paying attention to changes in your animal's behavior, appetite, energy, digestion, mobility, and overall well-being.
And it means working collaboratively with veterinary professionals to make decisions based on your pet's individual needs.
Natural wellness and conventional veterinary medicine do not have to exist in opposition. For many pet parents, the most thoughtful approach may involve combining appropriate veterinary care with evidence-informed nutrition, lifestyle support, and carefully selected complementary options.
Helping Our Pets Thrive
Our animals depend on us to make decisions on their behalf.
From the food we provide to the supplements we consider, every choice is an opportunity to learn more about what supports their health and quality of life.
The world of natural pet wellness can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Marketing claims don't always tell the whole story, and not every natural product is automatically safe, effective, or appropriate for every animal.
That's why education matters.
By learning about nutrition, supplement quality, the endocannabinoid system, functional mushrooms, and responsible product sourcing, pet parents can become more informed participants in their animals' care.
