Forgiveness Without Forgetting: Reclaiming Your Power Through Healing with Shannon Curtis
Welcome back to Light Body Radio!
What if forgiveness isn't about what you give to someone else—but what you give back to yourself?
Forgiveness is often presented as a simple act of letting go. We're told to forgive those who have hurt us, move forward, and leave the past behind. But for people navigating trauma, shame, betrayal, or painful relationships, forgiveness can be far more complicated.
What does it actually mean to forgive?
Does forgiveness mean forgetting what happened? Does it mean accepting someone's behavior? Does it mean allowing someone who hurt you back into your life?
According to intuitive coach, speaker, author, and founder of Angel Goddess Healing, Shannon Curtis, the answer is NO.
In this episode of Light Body Radio, Dr. Lara May and Shannon explore forgiveness from a different perspective, one centered on healing, personal power, self-awareness, intuition, and healthy boundaries.
Understanding Forgiveness as a Healing Practice
For Shannon, forgiveness became an important part of her own spiritual and emotional healing journey. Rather than viewing forgiveness as something done for the person who caused harm, she began to understand it as a way of releasing the pain and shame she had been carrying.
One of the most powerful ideas discussed in this episode is that forgiveness can be about recognizing what belongs to you—and what doesn't.
When someone causes us pain, we can sometimes carry their actions, their words, their judgments, or their behavior long after the experience itself has ended. The event may be in the past, but the emotional weight can continue influencing how we see ourselves, our relationships, and our future.
Forgiveness can create an opportunity to begin separating yourself from that pain.
It isn't about denying what happened.
It isn't about pretending that the experience didn't matter.
And it isn't about saying that someone's behavior was acceptable.
Instead, forgiveness can become a conscious decision to stop allowing the past to continue defining your identity.
Forgiveness Does Not Mean Forgetting
One of the most important distinctions in this conversation is the difference between forgiving and forgetting.
Healing doesn't require you to erase your memories.
In fact, remembering what happened can sometimes help you recognize patterns, establish boundaries, and make different choices moving forward.
Forgiveness can coexist with remembering.
It can also coexist with accountability.
And perhaps most importantly, forgiveness can coexist with boundaries.
You can release resentment toward someone while still deciding that you don't want that person in your life.
You can forgive someone while recognizing that their behavior was harmful.
You can wish someone healing while maintaining distance.
You can let go of anger without giving someone access to you again.
This is an especially important message for anyone who has been taught that forgiveness automatically requires reconciliation.
It doesn't.
Forgiveness can be an internal healing process rather than an invitation for someone to return.
Reclaiming Your Personal Power
Traumatic experiences can influence the stories we tell ourselves about who we are.
Over time, painful experiences may lead to beliefs such as:
"Something is wrong with me."
"I am not worthy."
"I can't trust anyone."
"I should have done something differently."
"This is who I am now."
Healing involves examining those stories and determining whether they still belong to you.
Shannon describes forgiveness as a way of reclaiming power—not by changing the past, but by changing the relationship you have with it.
When you stop allowing someone else's actions to determine your sense of worth, you begin to create space for a different identity.
That shift can be profound.
Trauma, Intuition, and Spiritual Healing
Shannon also shares how her intuitive abilities became more pronounced as she moved deeper into her own healing journey.
She believes that while intuition is something we all possess, developing a relationship with intuition requires discernment.
Learning to recognize the difference between fear, conditioning, anxiety, intuition, and genuine inner knowing can take time.
For Shannon, healing helped clear some of the emotional and psychological patterns that had previously made it difficult to trust herself.
This connection between healing and intuition is an important part of her work with clients. Rather than treating intuition as something completely separate from personal growth, she views it as part of learning to listen more deeply to yourself.
Healing the Inner Child
Shannon's work also focuses heavily on inner-child healing.
The inner child represents the younger parts of ourselves that experienced fear, rejection, shame, abandonment, or other painful experiences.
When those experiences remain unresolved, they can continue influencing our adult relationships, behaviors, beliefs, and emotional responses.
Inner-child work can create an opportunity to acknowledge those younger parts of ourselves with compassion rather than judgment.
Instead of asking, "Why am I like this?", healing can invite us to ask:
"What happened to me, and what does this part of me need now?"
That shift from judgment to curiosity can be incredibly powerful.
Forgiveness and Boundaries Can Exist Together
Perhaps one of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is that forgiveness should never require the abandonment of healthy boundaries.
Boundaries allow us to determine what behavior we will accept, what relationships we want to maintain, and how much access others have to our lives.
Forgiveness doesn't remove those choices.
In fact, healing can make boundaries clearer.
When we become more connected to ourselves, we may become more willing to say:
"I forgive you, but I don't want a relationship with you."
"I understand what happened, but I won't allow it to happen again."
"I release the anger, but I still remember the lesson."
"I wish you well, but I choose myself."
These aren't contradictions.
They can be signs of growth.
Releasing Shame and Reconnecting With Yourself
Shame often tells us that something is fundamentally wrong with who we are.
Healing begins to challenge that belief.
Instead of identifying ourselves through what happened to us, we can begin recognizing ourselves through the choices we make today.
Forgiveness can become part of that process—not as a requirement to forget, but as an opportunity to stop carrying emotional burdens that no longer need to define us.
The goal isn't to rewrite history.
The goal is to reclaim the present.
A New Perspective on Healing
This conversation offers a powerful reminder that healing isn't always about finding a way to change what happened.
Sometimes it's about changing the amount of power that experience has over your life today.
Forgiveness can be part of that process.
It can help us release shame, reconnect with ourselves, strengthen our boundaries, deepen our intuition, and create space for a future that isn't dictated by the wounds of the past.
If you're navigating trauma, emotional healing, inner-child work, or a difficult relationship with your past, this episode of LightBody Radio offers a compassionate invitation to look at forgiveness from a new perspective.
You don't have to forget to heal.
You don't have to excuse what happened.
And you don't have to give someone access to you in order to forgive them.
Sometimes forgiveness is simply the moment you decide that what happened to you no longer gets to decide who you become.
