Crystals, Energy & Intention: Where Science Meets Spirituality with Dr. Lara May
Welcome back to Light Body Radio!
Crystals are everywhere.
You may find them on an altar, beside someone's bed, around their home, worn as jewelry, carried in a pocket, or incorporated into meditation and spiritual practices. Some people feel deeply connected to them. Others look at a crystal and think, "It's just a rock."
And honestly? Both reactions are worth exploring.
In this episode of Light Body Radio: Wellness Illuminated, Dr. Lara May opens up a conversation about crystals that goes beyond the usual assumptions. Rather than approaching the topic from a place of blind belief—or automatic skepticism—she invites us to become curious about what crystals are, why people are drawn to them, and how science and spirituality can have a meaningful conversation.
What Exactly Are Crystals?
From a geological perspective, crystals are minerals or other substances whose atoms are arranged in an organized, repeating structure. Their composition, structure, and formation determine many of the physical characteristics we associate with them, including their color, hardness, transparency, and shape.
In other words, there is a very tangible scientific story behind every crystal.
But humans have also been fascinated by minerals, stones, and crystals for thousands of years. Across cultures, people have incorporated them into art, jewelry, rituals, meditation, symbolism, and spiritual traditions.
That raises an interesting question:
Where does the physical object end and our relationship with it begin?
Do Crystals Have Power?
This is where the conversation becomes more nuanced.
There is a difference between saying that a crystal has a particular scientifically established healing effect and exploring the ways a person may use a crystal as part of an intentional or spiritual practice.
Someone might hold a crystal while meditating.
Someone else might place one in their workspace as a reminder to slow down.
Another person might wear a particular stone because it carries personal meaning.
The experience of using an object with intention can be meaningful without requiring us to abandon critical thinking.
And that distinction matters.
Rather than presenting every claim about crystal healing as scientific fact, we can ask better questions:
What do we actually know? What do we believe? What do we personally experience? And what still deserves investigation?
The Role of Intention
One of the most interesting parts of the crystal conversation isn't necessarily the question of whether a particular stone possesses a specific property.
It may be the question of what we bring to the experience.
Intention can change how we interact with an object, a practice, or a moment.
A crystal might become a physical reminder of a goal.
A stone might represent grounding.
A piece of jewelry might carry a personal memory.
A meditation ritual might create space to pause and reconnect.
These experiences can be explored without automatically turning them into scientific claims.
And that is where curiosity becomes powerful.
A More Curious Way to Explore Spirituality
You don't have to decide immediately whether you "believe in crystals."
Instead, consider approaching the subject with an open but discerning mind.
Ask:
What is scientifically established about crystals and minerals?
What traditions and cultural practices surround them?
What do people mean when they talk about "crystal energy"?
How does intention influence personal rituals and experiences?
Which claims have evidence behind them—and which remain speculative?
Can a spiritual practice be meaningful without being treated as scientific fact?
These questions allow us to explore without losing our ability to think critically.
More Than Just Rocks?
Maybe the most interesting answer is that crystals can be both.
They can be rocks and minerals with fascinating geological structures.
And they can also become meaningful objects within someone's personal, cultural, or spiritual practice.
The important thing is knowing the difference between what science demonstrates, what spirituality explores, and what we personally experience.
In this episode of Wellness Illuminated, Dr. Lara invites you into that middle ground—a place where curiosity is welcome, skepticism is allowed, and spirituality doesn't require you to turn off your critical thinking.
Because perhaps the real question isn't simply:
"Do crystals have power?"
Maybe the better question is:
"What happens when we approach the mystery with both an open heart and a discerning mind?"
